We come across a lot of stories about Akbar and Birbal, but there are only a few that stay with us for life. This is one such story. Though a very short one, it is one such story that once you’ve heard it, you’ll start noticing everywhere. In your own life, on the news, in everyday conversations.
It’s about a tank, some milk, and a single night when a lot of people had exactly the same little thought, all at the same time, without telling anyone.
It All Started With A Generous Idea
Akbar decided to do something kind for his people. He ordered a large tank to be placed in the centre of the palace courtyard. Every nobleman and courtier in the kingdom was asked to come, one by one, during the night, and pour in a vessel of milk.
By the next morning, the tank would be full and all that milk would be given to the poor.
Everyone who heard the idea agreed to it, and some of them even bowed to Akbar with respect. After that every one went back to their home to prepare for the night.
One Small Thought, Repeated Many Times
That night, as each nobleman made his way through the dark towards the courtyard, a little thought crept into his mind. The same little thought, in fact, though none of them knew that.
“There are hundreds of us pouring milk tonight. If I pour in water instead, just this once, who’s really going to notice? One vessel, among so many? It won’t make any difference at all.”
And so, one by one, in the quiet darkness, each nobleman walked up to the tank… and poured in water.
And the surprising part here is that every single one of them poured water, and each one was very certain that he was the only one doing this.
The Morning After
The next morning, Akbar arrived at the courtyard with great ceremony, eager to see the tank brimming with milk for his people.
He looked in.
The tank was full , completely full, but was full of water. Not a single drop of milk anywhere.
Birbal stood quietly beside him. After a moment, he said simply:
“Every man thought the same thing, Jahanpanah. That’s the problem.”
So, What Can We Take From This Story?
- When everyone assumes someone else will do the right thing, sometimes… nobody does.
- A small, private choice, the one that feels like it “won’t matter” — adds up, especially when many people make the same choice.
- What we do when nobody’s watching often says more about us than what we do in public.
What gets me about this story is how gentle it is and how true. Nobody in this story is a villain, exactly. Every single nobleman just had one small, quiet, very human thought: “surely it’s fine, just this once, just from me.”
And the tank ended up full of water anyway.
I think about this story every time I hear someone say, “it won’t make a difference if just I do it.” Because if everyone thinks that and quietly, they often do the tank fills with water. Every single time. It’s such a gentle way of saying something quite serious: that our small, private choices add up, whether we notice it happening or not.
